The 2026 Annual General Meeting and Scientific Conference (AGM & SC) of the Association of Nigerian Private Medical Practitioners (ANPMP), Lagos State Branch, has opened with strong emphasis on quality healthcare and the need for practitioners to understand the legal implications of medical practice.

The well-attended event featured presentations, on medical negligence, panel session and exhibitions by pharmaceutical and medical equipment companies.

Speaking in a paper entitled Quality Pays, Dr. Olaolu Adesola, stressed that patients and their families were increasingly seeking healthcare facilities where quality care is assured.

He identified professionalism, patient-centred care, safety, respect, cleanliness, good ambience, efficiency and integrity as key attributes of a quality healthcare facility, noting that quality is non-negotiable and remains a major strength of any healthcare

The Deputy Registrar of the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN), Dr. Enejo Abdu, who spoke extensively on medical negligence, used practical examples and real-life litigation cases to illustrate the complexities surrounding negligence claims.

Dr Abdu noted that an action perceived by a patient or family as negligence may, in some circumstances, have been the best clinical decision available to a practitioner in an effort to save a life.

He cautioned doctors against guaranteeing treatment outcomes, stressing that practitioners are not God and can only do their best based on the circumstances before them.

In a goodwill message, the Lagos Commissioner for Health, represented by his Special Adviser, Dr. Kemi Opeyemi, commended the outgoing ANPMP Lagos State Chairman, Dr. Jonathan Esegine, and his team for their contributions and wished the Association continued success.

The conference also featured a scientific lecture on cardiovascular diseases, a panel session and product exhibitions by pharmaceutical and medical equipment companies, making the opening day a significant platform for professional learning, knowledge-sharing and industry engagement.
